The game is set in the fictional Kingdom of Boletaria, ruled over by the merciless demon lord. The protagonist is an undead man named Lordran who is cursed by a dark spirit to wander aimlessly until he can find a way to end his nightmare. Along with assistance from other cursed souls, Lordran sets off for Boletaria with little hope of finding solace or salvation within its walls. The player will explore areas originally designed for up to four players at once; it's possible to explore most of the world's zones solo, but you'll likely need help when fighting bosses (which are deviously devious), or when attempting things like parrying attacks or using your Bonfire flame on NPC merchants. Gameplay is similar to that of Demon's Souls, but with some significant changes. The player can equip up to 4 different weapons and pieces of armor. The players can also use up to 4 "Estus Flasks" (a unique healing system introduced in the game). However, while the game allows you to carry almost 800 souls (the game's currency), you may only create 1 Estus Flask at a time. The two main differences are that the player has access to vastly more powerful equipment (though not all of it can even be seen before allowing the player access to the other one-handed weapon type). The second is that the AI has been significantly improved. The enemy AI has been vastly improved to the point where most enemies will react to your presence with a level of intelligence most NPC's in the original game did not possess. To further this change, most enemies will actually do their own thing when left alone (i.e. not rush you), and NPCs more often than not will react appropriately to your presence (i.e. they won't turn hostile if they're carrying an item for you). Bosses are also improved upon; many of the bosses in the original game were significantly harder than their real counterparts (examples include: Bell Gargoyles were noticeably less maneuverable, and Sif was no longer a "tough but fair" encounter). The final boss was also changed from a sin-eater into a dragon. The new boss is considerably more difficult than its predecessor and can be avoided entirely by breaking the seal on the other side of the fog gate. As in Demon's Souls, dying will set you back to your last bonfire with all souls and humanity lost, whilst non-boss enemies will respawn when you rest at a bonfire. The game also contains the first known instance of human NPCs that are willing to help you. Bonfires are relatively rare compared to Demon's Souls, but can be easily identified by their fire-like appearance and the bonfire icon on the map. The game's world is split into several areas. These areas are all interconnected via paths consisting of two main paths, surrounded by side paths which lead to walled-off sections (and, eventually, boss doors). eccc085e13
